Honoring the Blessed Gods of Olympus

The Olympian Gods

The Gods of Greece tend to be divided into several categories. The Protogonoi, the Titans, the Olympian Gods, the Chthonic Gods, etc. Whether the ancients actually paid much heed to such distinctions can be argued against, but we are in the modern world, so the distinction is a fair one.

The Olympian Gods seem to have been seen in two distinct ways. The first is as the children and siblings of Zeus. As king of the Gods, the family of Zeus are the high royalty of heaven, the Olympians. Why Olympians? Because according to myth, the lived at the very top of Mount Olympus. The peculiarity is that there were actually many mountains named Olympus in the land the Greeks claimed as theirs in ancient times. You see, the Greeks seemed to refer to the tallest mountain in many regions as Olympus, which would indicate a kind of association between the word Olympus and the concept of "Highest" or "Greatest".

This leads to the second distinct definition of Olympian Gods as the Highest Gods.

The list of Gods generally thought of as Olympian can differ depending on what definition you use, and for the category here, I am using the family of Zeus because it offers a smaller number and looks better in the page layout (I'm rather practical)

Thus, the family of Zeus which is most traditionally thought of as Olympian is as follows.

Zeus, King of the Gods
Hera, wife of Zeus and Queen of the Gods
Poseidon, brother of Zeus
Aphrodite, who is either aunt or daughter of Zeus depending on her origin myth
Hestia, sister of Zeus
Demeter, sister of Zeus

Apollo, Hephaestos, Artemis, Athena, Ares, Hermes, and Dionysos are the children of Zeus
